 The Architect

Seth Freaking Rollins!. He’s really freaking good. Did you know that he took the WWE World Heavyweight Title from Brock Lesnar? Or that he’s the only man to cash in a Money in the Bank contract in the main event of WrestleMania? Or that he’s the only human being to ever hold the WWE World Heavyweight and United States Championships simultaneously? If you don’t, worry not: He’ll tell you soon enough. And if you somehow manage to tune out his (justified) boasts, it won’t be long until this hybrid athlete’s skills in the ring turn you into a believer. A veteran of the independent scene who’s more ninja than wrestler, Rollins set up shop as one of WWE’s on-the-spot history makers from the second he walked in the door. From his reign as the first-ever NXT Champion to his vaunted time as the “Architect” of The Shield, Rollins’ first two years in WWE were a master class of evolution. Coincidentally enough, that’s the name of one of the factions he and his fellow Hounds of Justice managed to upend in their near-spotless two-year run throughout WWE’s ranks. He’s even better flying solo, racking up accolades faster than WWE can produce them. Within 15 months of The Shield’s breakup, Rollins had won a Money in the Bank contract and converted it into the WWE World Heavyweight Title and added John Cena’s U.S. Title to his trophy case. Is it even possible to hold this ascendant athlete down? If you’re lucky, but only for the short-term. As he’s fond of saying, Seth Rollins is the future, and the future can’t be stopped.

The Shield vs Rhodes Brothers and Big E Langston

Dean Ambrose and Langston start things off. Within seconds, Langston is out-powering Ambrose and throwing him around. Ambrose tags in Seth Rollins and Langston does the same to him before tagging in Goldust. The babyfaces remain in control, including a big dive spot by Cody Rhodes, as we head to a mid-match commercial.

When we return from commercial, Roman Reigns is beating the crap out of Cody Rhodes in the ring. Reigns tags in Rollins, and both Ambrose and Rollins double-team Rhodes. The smoke clears and Rollins picks up where Reigns left off, beating up Rhodes in the heel corner. Rollins tags Reigns back in. Rhodes hits the Disaster Kick on Reigns and both guys are down. Reigns tags in Ambrose, but Rhodes also makes the tag to Langston.

Langston takes the hot tag and is cleaning house on all three members of The Shield. Langston sends Rollins and Reigns over the top and hits Ambrose with a big splash in the middle of the ring. Rollins comes back in to interfere, but Langston sends him back out to the floor. Langston hits Ambrose with a suplex-throw. Reigns and Rhodes come in to interfere. Rhodes goes for a Disaster Kick on Reigns, but Reigns catches him coming off the ropes with a Superman punch. Reigns blasts Goldust with a spear. After some double-team action by Ambrose and Rollins, Rollins, now the legal man, pins Langston for the 1-2-3.

WWE’s Seth Rollins recently talks to Philly.com’s The Squared Circle about his match against CM Punk, The Shield and many more. Here’s the highlight of the interview:

The last 14 months have been quite the whirlwind for WWE superstar Seth Rollins.

At the Survivor Series in November of 2012, Rollins, along with his teammates Dean Ambrose and Roman Reins, made their WWE television debut.

In one night, they went from ordinary developmental talents to known commodities on the WWE roster.

Since then, Rollins’ career has taken off. He’s made an appearance at WrestleMania, won the WWE Tag Team championships and has gone up against main event players on a nightly basis.

“We’ve all had the opportunity to get in the ring with some guys that are considered in the history of this business; CM Punk, John Cena, the Undertaker, The Rock, guys like that,” Rollins said. “At this point, it’s kind of customary. I don’t feel out of place. There are no nerves. I feel at home.”

“I feel like for me, I’ve become smarter,” he said. “I’ve become a more intelligent wrestler. I’ve become a more intelligent performer and I think that shows. I’ve had the best matches of my career probably over the last year.”

“Philadelphia is kind of like a Mecca for professional wrestling, especially the old ECW Arena down in South Philly. That’s the place I always wanted to wrestle growing up and I got that opportunity when I worked with Ring of Honor,” Rollins said.”

“The fans are notorious in Philadelphia for being a little harsh sometimes, but they’ve always been kind to me,” he added. “I’ve had some memorable moments in Philadelphia and I hope to have another one coming up on Tuesday at Smackdown.”

Back from a commercial break and Dean Ambrose comes in to work CM Punk. Rollins gets the tag and punches Punk in the jaw. Rollins charges across the length of the ring for a splash and then looks for a pin. Punk kicks out. Ambrose is again the legal man and focuses on isolating Punk away from his corner. Ambrose tosses Punk out of the ring and then follows after. Ambrose whips Punk towards the steps but is reversed and hits them himself. Reigns tosses Ambrose back into the ring so he can be tagged by Rollins. Punk hits Rollins so Reigns gets the tag. Reigns drags Punk away from the corner and then delivers a crotch chop towards the New Age Outlaws. Punk kicks Reigns from behind and then crawls towards his corner.

The New Age Outlaws jump off the apron as Punk looks for a tag. This leaves Punk all alone as he falls victim to a spear from Roman Reigns.

After the match the Shield continues to attack CM Punk. Reigns signals for the Triple Powerbomb. Punk is left lying lifeless in the ring.

The Shield

May: Every member of The Shield captured title gold at May’s Extreme Rules, making it impossible not to believe in The Shield.

EDITOR’S NOTE: When we tried to present The Shield with their trophy, we were a bit nervous. Everything was going fine — they even showed up for the shoot on time. That’s when things went off the rails: They wanted no part of the trophy, and almost destroyed the set. But while they refused any on-the-record comments, they did leave us with a cryptic video you can view on the digital version of WWE Magazine. Head to iTunes, the Android shop or the Kindle store to download it now!

Seth Rollins

The hierarchy of The Hounds of Justice may not involve ranking its members, but it can feel at times that Seth Rollins gets short shrift. United States Champion Dean Ambrose offers more unpredictable moments. Roman Reigns intimidates the opposition by stomping on anyone who dares to question him.

And Rollins? The smallest Shield member carries his weight as the workhorse of the trio, the relentless warrior of the group. He speaks in the measured tones that often elude his cohorts, and backs up a natural swagger with an arsenal of maneuvers designed to grind down any grappler’s ability to endure.

This strategy already paid dividends in singles competition against everyone from Jey Uso to Goldust, let alone all the pairings that Rollins & Reigns dominated during their reign as WWE Tag Team Champions. It also draws inevitable comparisons to CM Punk and Jeff Hardy, two competitors who overcame criticisms about their size and talent to reach unprecedented heights in WWE.

The Shield cast a large shadow over the WWE Universe, and that shade often obstructs what Rollins has achieved compared to his fellow Hounds. Those measuring success in championships point out Ambrose’s eight-month possession of the U.S. Title, then fail to mention that Rollins was the first NXT Champion in history. Critics may coo for camera-ready moves like Reigns’ spear, but forget the captivating sight of the “Black Out” stomp kick by the black-clad Superstar with the blond streak in his hair.

Seth Rollins can already boast accomplishments in one year in WWE that some Superstars never experience in their entire career. Ignore him at your own peril. — MATTHEW ARTUS
