No. 7 – Chris Jericho

Will Stephenson of Arkansas Times got a chance to talk to WWE Superstar Seth Rollins about his career, wrestling and more. Check out the highlights below:

AT: I read you grew up in Iowa, what was that like?

SR: Iowa’s great. I grew up in a real small town here, so it’s nice, not too overcrowded. I’m in Iowa now—we’ve got a couple of days off before we hit the road, so I’m just hanging out. I wanted to be decompress with family and friends, my dog, my girlfriend. Just try and hang out and enjoy their company.

AT: Did you always want to be a wrestler?

SR: I was always a wrestling fan growing up and I pretty much knew this was what I was going to try to do since I was about fifteen or sixteen. My friends were all really into it at that time. Late 1990s, early 2000s, the industry was just really booming then. You had guys like The Rock, Steve Austin, all those guys.

AT: Were you a violent kid?

SR: I never got in fights, I was a model student, got good grades. I wasn’t much of an extracurricular participant, I didn’t play sports or anything like that. I was too busy playing around with my friends and wrestling in my back yard. But I was a good kid, I didn’t drink or smoke. Model citizen.

AT: Did your family support you?

SR: When I first told my family I was going to be a wrestler, they were pretty opposed to it. They wanted me to go to college. Once it started to take off and I started to do okay and travel more, I think they kind of hopped on board and saw that it was something I was going to work for. Now they come all the time.

AT: Was the independent circuit very different from what you’re doing now?

SR: I mean I started training in a shipping warehouse, and I’m in Wrestlemania XXX this year, in front of millions of people worldwide, you know? I spent a few years cutting my teeth in the Midwest, I worked for Ring of Honor, then I went down to Florida and relearned everything there. It wasn’t different, but the crowds are bigger now. The paychecks are nicer, but that’s not really why I do it, so it doesn’t make much of a difference for me.

WWE Superstar Seth Rollins spoke to RedEye about WWE, his time on the local wrestling circuit and much more! Check out the highlights of the interview below:

RE: “WWE Raw” hits Chicago on Monday and this is your second home. How has Chicago helped your career?

SR: It’s pretty surreal. With our schedules there isn’t a lot of opportunities to sit back and smell the roses, as they say. Every time I come back to Chicago it’s just amazing the support I have. It’s amazing to think I was in the Berwyn Eagles Club in Berwyn for [All American Wrestling]. Coming back to the area I feel like I’m on the top of the world. It’s a very satisfying feeling that I get to now wrestle in front of the biggest crowds each and every day. The crowds here are always awesome, and they have all treated me with such respect and class. It’s just very special to me.

There’s always an electric buzz about this city. There’s some kind of energy that nobody can figure out, but there it adds a little extra pressure to exceed expectations. The butterflies will be there for sure on Monday.

RE: Many have said you have the talent to become an individual star in the WWE. In five years, where do you see yourself?

SR: Five years? I see myself as world champion. If you were in my position and you aren’t saying that, something is wrong with you. I want to be holding a title, beating up John Cena and Randy Orton and headlining pay-per-views. I have the confidence and drive and those goals would be satisfying.

RE: What are your thoughts on the new WWE network?

SR: For me, first and foremost I am a fan. I logged in a few days ago and it’s amazing, you can’t put it any way else. I am scrolling through the old PPVs [pay-per-views], looking at the Eddie Guerrero matches from Judgment Day and I did everything on my phone. It’s a revolutionary step going forward and will change the way the business model is formed in the next century. This is the next big step and this is something that will continue to grow each and every day.

With all the old NXT shows there will be plenty of my matches I can go back and watch as well, to relive those “rookie” days. I think in the near future you could see a section of just Seth Rollins.

Full Interview:: Behind The Shield: Chicago wrestler comes home

We cut to a Wyatt and Shield segment where the two groups talk about being the ones that “laid the foundation” for NXT. Seth Rollins mentioned during this that he was the first-ever NXT Champion. We cut back to the expert panel and Nash compares The Shield to himself, Scott Hall and X-Pac. Hart was asked about the Wyatt Family, and he said he liked their “unpredictability”. He joked that there’s something to be said about imbreeding with the Wyatts, but ultimately, the job was to put both groups over.
