In the height of an intense SmackDown main event – in which both The Wyatt Family and Roman Reigns were banned from ringside –Ambrose hit Wyatt with Dirty Deeds. But, before he could attempt a pinfall, the exhausted Lunatic Fringe spotted Rollins standing on top of the SmackDown announce table. Choosing to put his full attention on pursuing his ex-cohort, Ambrose ran head on into Wyatt’s Sister Abigail.

After discussing the controversial events on Raw involving the injured Daniel Bryan and the fate of the now vacant WWE World Heavyweight Title – which will be decided in a Ladder Match at Money in the Bank on June 29 – WWE COO Triple H handed Seth Rollins the mic.

The so-called Architect of The Shield described the power he felt when he betrayed Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns, cutting out the “dead weight.” Satisfied that he had left his former brothers languishing in “mediocrity” as he seized his opportunity to rise to the top, Rollins thanked Triple H for helping him create that chance.

Dolph Ziggler then interrupted to label Rollins a “self-centered scumbag traitor,” before promising to wipe that smug look his adversary’s face and cram that arrogance down his neck later that night.

Seth Rollins vs Dolph Ziggler

In a free-for-all SmackDown rematch, Dolph Ziggler looked to get payback on the devious Seth Rollins. But, in the final moment of an incredible effort by both Superstars, it was his iron-clad opponent who would emerge victorious with Peace of Mind.

Michael Cole is in the ring, which is decorated with a black carpet. Two chairs are set up. Michael Cole introduces Seth Rollins to the ring, and he comes out to new music in a suit. A “You sold out” chant breaks out.

Michael Cole tries to start the interview, but Rollins stops him. Rollins doesn’t understand what all the controversy is about. Is it about what he did last week because that wasn’t a big deal to him. He was just doing what’s best for business… for his business. The Shield, the greatest faction in the history of the WWE, created by him. Rollins asks if Cole thinks he doesn’t have the right to destroy his own creation. It takes an architect, a mastermind to create something like The Shield. Do you think Dean Ambrose is in anyway responsible for that? Ambrose is a lunatic. Left to his own devices, he’d be face down in a ditch. As for Roman Reigns, the golden boy, you’ll never see anger and fury in a man like him, but without someone to harness and control it, he’s worthless. Ambrose and Reigns are nothing without him. They owe him for every ounce of success they have ever achieved.

Cole says that many will argue that The Shield was about three individuals who came together to form an awesome team. Rollins says they’ll find out later on tonight when the remnants of The Shield have a pathetic last hurrah against The Wyatt Family. Rollins asks why everyone is surprised. He took The Shield as high as it could go. They conquered the world. At Payback, they beat Evolution in a clean sweep. From every experience in life, you should learn something. He learned something from Evolution. To be a success in business, you have to evolve and adapt. The crowd boos Rollins and chants, “You sold out!” Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns are watching backstage. Rollins says he bought in to the Evolution of Seth Rollins. Another thing they won’t admit is that it took a lot of guts to do what he did last week, but everyone is fixated on the fact that he “betrayed” his brothers. Maybe to Ambrose and Reigns, they were brothers. To him, they were just business partners, and he severed a business relationship. For two years, every night, he came out here and put his fist out, saying, “Believe in The Shield.” However, every night he really meant that everyone should start believing in Seth Rollins!

Rollins says that’s it before asking if that’s all Cole wants to hear. Rollins then mentions that he remembers Dean Ambrose saying that they’d let him say his peace before kicking the hell out of him. Rollins throws his chair out of the ring before saying that he’s said his peace. Cole quickly leaves the ring as Rollins wonders where The Shield is. The Shield make their way to the ring, and The Wyatt Family’s video clips in! Luke Harper and Erick Rowan are standing where Rollins was. Harper and Rowan attack Ambrose and Reigns, but they soon get a hold of Rollins. Bray Wyatt quickly runs in, and The Wyatt Family attacks Ambrose and Reigns. Rollins escapes to the back. John Cena’s music hits, and he runs down to save Ambrose and Reigns. The Wyatt Family retreats up the ramp.

In the wake of WWE Payback, Seth Rollins addressed his stunning Raw betrayal of The Hounds of Justice on SmackDown, only to raise the ire of both Dolph Ziggler and Big Show. Plus, Bray Wyatt declared himself reborn and a Triple Threat Intercontinental Title Match lit up Friday night.

After turning his back on his “brothers” Monday with the help of a brutal chair assault, Seth Rollins kicked off SmackDown with WWE COO Triple H by his side, offering no explanation for his shocking treachery on Raw, instead choosing to hold his motives close to his black vest.

Dolph Ziggler – who predicted he would “catch a beating” for what he was about to say – hit the stage to tell The Architect that he “sold out.” In response, The Game, noting that The Showoff must be Nostradamus, announced an impromptu showdown between the former World Heavyweight Champion and the Shield turncoat.

A replay is shown from earlier in the night of Batista quitting the WWE following many broken promises made to him.

The Shield cuts a promo before the match. Dean Ambrose says they feel great. They’re bruised and beaten up, but last night they faced their biggest challenge to date in Evolution. When the napalm settled, they did what they said they would do – they had a clean sweep over Evolution without a single casualty. Ambrose says that is domination. Seth Rollins says they were told to “adapt or perish,” and that’s what they did. The Shield adapted while Evolution perished. Earlier tonight, the whole world was witness to their implosion. The reason Evolution perished is because even though they are three of the greatest superstars in the industry’s history, they were not one like The Shield last night. They were three strangers standing on the same side of the ring. Roman Reigns says Evolution aren’t brothers. The three men in the ring right now are brothers. Reigns says they are Evolution and The Shield. Reigns then tells Randy Orton to get his ass out there so he can break his jaw with the symbol of excellence.

Evolution’s music hits, and Triple H accompanies Randy Orton to the ring carrying a sledgehammer. Seth Rollins grabs some steel chairs and brings them to the ring. Triple H says if they haven’t figured it out yet, what he does better than anybody is adapt. Last night was Plan A. Tonight, it’s Plan B. There’s always a Plan B. Rollins then cracks Reigns in the back with the steel chair! Ambrose looks on in shock, and Rollins hits him in the midsection with the chair before smacking the chair off his back as well! Rollins viciously assaults Reigns and Ambrose with the steel chair before throwing it away! The crowd boos as Triple H and Randy Orton look on.

The crowd chants, “You sold out!” toward Rollins as he sets another chair up in the center of the ring. Rollins then gives Ambrose the Curb Stomp on the chair! Rollins takes a chair and leaves the ring. Rollins stares at Triple H and Orton before looking at the steel chair. Rollins then hands the steel chair to Orton. Orton gets in the ring, and he cracks Reigns on the back with the chair. Orton digs the edge into his spine a few times before bending it over his back. Orton viciously slams it off Reigns’ back. Orton unzips Reigns’ vest and rips off his shirt. Orton then takes the vest off. There is some major discoloration on Reigns’ back from the chair shots. Orton then gives Reigns an RKO on the steel chair! Rollins gets in the ring, and Triple H puts his arm around him. Triple H, Orton, and Rollins stand over Reigns and Ambrose as the crowd chants, “You sold out!” at them. Triple H puts his arms around both me, and he mouths, “That’s Evolution” before saying, “I won.” Triple H’s music then hits, and he lays the sledgehammer on Reigns’ chest.

Video:: Seth Rollins turns on The Shield

A decade ago, Triple H, Batista and Randy Orton — alongside Ric Flair — embodied the past, present and future of sports-entertainment all at once. They adopted the name Evolution for that very reason, which at the time was bad ass, but, in the wake of the events in Chicago, feels like a cosmic joke.

At Payback, Evolution was the very thing that caught up with the collective of former World Champions, and it came in the form of three younger men in flak jackets and combat boots. In a No Holds Barred Elimination Match, The Shield beat the once unstoppable faction, sweeping their side completely in a lopsided three-to-zero victory that clearly illustrated which side adapted and which would perish.

Natural selection is never a pretty thing and that was certainly true here. When a match spills into the audience within the first minute of action, you know you’re in for a barnburner. And that’s what the rowdy Second City faithful got as WWE cameras struggled to keep up with three separate brawls in separate pockets of the arena — Reigns and Batista at the top of the entrance ramp, Ambrose and Orton at ringside and Rollins and Triple H slugging it out within an eyelash of fans.

Eventually the six Superstars took a second to breathe with each side manning their positions on opposite sides of the ring. There was a brief moment of strategic gamesmanship here — you could almost compare it to chess if chess was played by whipping the pieces at your opponent as hard you possibly can.
